Description

A wine seldom seen out of the region in which it is grown, this incredible example of Welschriesling shows what can be achieved with a variety that perhaps isn’t renowned for making seriously complex wines. It is produced from grapes grown on 60-year-old vines, naturally fermented in 1000 litre barrels and then aged on lees for 1 year before resting in tank prior to bottling. There is no fining and the wine is bottled with only one paper filtration.

The result is a wine that is tough to summarise, and perhaps the closest comparison that comes to mind is the terrific, age defying Chenin Blancs of the Loire Valley, and Savennieres or Montlouis specifically. Either way, the final wine in bottle walks a brilliant line of flesh and fruit, tension and shape, and is thirst quenching and dangerously moreish. – Velich

About Austrian Wine

Austria is a country with over 4000 years of wine making history, however, it unfortunately doesn’t seem to enjoy the status and popularity that the high quality of it’s wines deserve. Decades later, the country is still feeling the effects of a scandal in 1985 that destroyed its credibility at the time.

Grüner Veltliner is the most important wine made in Austria, distinguished by its lightly fruity, noticeable spice and characteristic white pepper notes. This variety comprises roughly a third of all plantings. In terms of volume, Riesling plays a much smaller role than in Germany, but is responsible for some of the most appreciated dry white wines made in the country.

In red varietals, Austrian native varieties are dominant and include the tart and peppery Zweigelt, spicy and dense Blaufränkisch and juicy Saint Laurent.
